Anne & Alan Brinkley's Story
When did you first get involved with CCFI?
We first got involved with CCFI about ten years ago when we attended a Hands & Hearts Luncheon. At that event, we learned about all of the good work CCFI was doing for children and families in our community and decided to contribute to its programs.
Why were you moved to support CCFI?
When our sons were growing up, they experienced difficulties in school that led to behavioral problems and ultimately affected the whole family. At that time, we saw how few programs were available to help. Later we decided that we wanted to establish a program for youth who were experiencing problems similar to those our sons had had. Because CCFI was already helping children and families in so many good ways, we felt that they would work with us to establish such a program for youth, ages 12 to 18.
What comes to mind when you think of CCFI?
We think about the many dedicated and trained professionals helping to run a variety of programs designed to help children and families.
What do you feel is the biggest impact CCFI has made on the community?
When anyone in a family experiences trauma, it can affect every family member and relationship in one’s life. We believe that the work CCFI is doing in the area of healing trauma is its most significant gift to our community. We are currently working with CCFI to launch a new program for youth called “Trauma Drama” which is an effective, and even fun, form of therapy. Unlike most others, it takes place in a group of peers and involves the whole body and the body’s memories, not just the brain. It helps participants develop social skills and feelings of belonging as well as helping its participants heal from trauma.
What would you like to say to encourage others to donate to CCFI?
Our dream is to see Trauma Drama and other effective therapeutic programs reach all youth who might not otherwise get the help they need. This requires substantial funding and lots of volunteer effort. We would highly encourage others in our community to give what they can to support CCFI in this important work.
